About This Book

This is a true story.

Britt Johnson was a slave in 1864 Texas.  In October of that year his family was captured by Kiowa and Comanche in an act of infamy known as the Elm Creek Raid.  On his own recognizance, Britt pursed the captors for seven years, attempting to repatriate his family.  A frontier tragedy, bloody, violent and unsparing.  Read "Killed by Indians 1871" to experience the frontier in all its terror and bravery.

Ethan Edwards, John Wayne's character in John Ford's 1956 Western The Searchers, was based on the real exploits of Britt Johnson. (In Alan LeMay's same-titled novel, the character is Amos.)
