While her own family is breaking up in Ponder, Texas, in 1954, thirteen-year-old Katie Sheridan is determined to get to know the town recluse, Miss Ina Fay Bagley. Miss Bagley has not left her big house in the middle of town in more than fifty years. Katie's mom is just the opposite; she wants to work outside her home, a daring idea in the 1950s. As Katie focuses on making her new friend, and on keeping her old ones, she begins to understand her parents and she learns to accept people as they are.
