Sir Lucius Gordon is down to his last sixpence and facing the debtor's gaol! He needs to marry money, but his reputation is damaged, so he needs to look outside Society for a bride. He finds one in widowed Julia Willoughby, who has her own reasons for needing a husband. She's not enthusiastic about wedding a dissolute aristocrat but her choices are limited as well.
