Can Caleb and Dandy survive the terrible Indian wars?

The magnificent stallion called Dandy is about the only good thing in Caleb's harsh life on the Kansas prairie. Then Caleb's stepfather sells the horse—to Custer's Seventh Cavalry.

Caleb just can't let Dandy be killed in the Indian wars. So he runs away and wrangles a job in Custer's camp as Dandy's groom. As the wars intensify, Caleb must face the cruel realities of the battlefield and the brutal treatment Custer inflicts on the Indians. Caleb must also make a heart-wrenching decision: whether to stay and remain a part of the merciless bloodbath or to desert his post—and leave Dandy behind forever.
