      Jeannie and Edith Urquhart were the daughters of a large and prosperous Glasgow family. Edith was practical and cautious, but Jeannie was impulsive and outgoing, and longed to escape from her respectable middle-class environment. Escape seemed to present itself when she met a young doctor, Alec Davidson, from Aberdeen, and they were married with the blessing of her family.
