About This Book

Jack is a deaf art student sitting for his final exam, but the unusual instructions in the paper throw him into a slight panic. Mainly because the class has been asked to paint a picture of what a poem printed up on the blackboard means to them. He knows what he would like to paint but not where to begin. This means he starts painting late and then to add to his problems, towards the end when time is almost up, he spills an entire bottle of black ink over his painting.
The art teacher tries to calm him by suggesting that he can save his painting, as long as he can do it during the next ten extra minutes she allows the class.
In the end, Jack is not sure if he has done sufficient to save his painting. But he is forced to put down his brush and hope for the best.
As Jack is her most promising art student, the teacher feels disappointed at first. But once the ink and paint has begun to dry, she looks at his painting again and is astonished to see that the ink has dried into tree-like images on the inky side that are very similar to those that Jack initially painted in autumn shades on the opposite side of the page. And since the mood of the poem is about change, she realizes that Jack has somehow managed to create a scene that depicts the changing moods of nature.
But will this be sufficient to win him the bursary he needs so badly?
Note: As Jack is deaf, he communicates by using sign language, so everyone takes a special interest in his work because the want him to succeed as an artist and also to win a bursary that will permit him to study overseas.
