The year is 1969, and newly graduated Meg Shaw, arrives in Grand Valley, Colorado, eager to begin her first teaching job. But all too quickly, what seems to be a lucky opportunity takes on sinister undertones. Why was she hired when more teachers clearly are not needed? Why do people listen in on her phone calls? Most troubling, why is Meg unable to reach her family back home in Illinois? And what about The Project, a nuclear bomb test scheduled to take place in the neighboring town of Rulison? As Meg and her friends try to unravel the twisted chain of lies and half-truths that brought her to Colorado, the threat of Project Rulison looms over them.
