About This Book

This is a saga unfolding over a period of nearly forty years, portraying in its course the difficult choice faced by a family with a German name and German blood, living in England during the First World War and the years immediately following it. It is too a story of a man's temptation and divided loyalty and of German espionage in England in the years before the First World War, and subsequently both in the United States and Canada. At its end, a long separated father and daughter, each face in their different ways, the bitter irony of what has happened to them both since the die was cast so many years before when the Kaiser ruled in Germany, Edward V11 was King/Emperor, and Arthur Balfour still Prime Minister. Beautifully and sensitively expressed, it grabs the imagination and is written with compassion and insight into the workings of human nature.
