How Carroll Came Home: A Novella

Tom Carroll, dressed in his khaki suit and carrying the rifle he used so effectively in his service in the Philippines, is home again.

It's been three years since his sweetheart's letter arrived telling him their engagement was over; that Alice would be marrying someone else.

On the 15-mile walk from the train station to his home, Tom stops to visit Cousin Mary, who is in trouble with 'The Committee,' a group which conspires to control tobacco prices. Mary has sold some of her tobacco without permission, and 'The Committee' has warned her that it will be visiting her this very night to make her pay for her disobediance.

But now there's a new man in town!
