Diana had to choose between love and her career as a doctor, though she longed to have both. When she finally sent her first love away, she thought she would never love again, and instead she tried to devote herself to the needs of the simple folk in her Devon fishing village.

Into her calm, uneventful life came the new Hotel, and to the hotel came Garrick Trent, to chase away her peace of mind. Ronnie, her first love, came too, bringing his wife with him, and Diana's life became more and more confused and storm-tossed. But at last, through bewilderment and suffering, she discovered the way to her true happiness.
