Hope

Sweet Drop in Africa: Hope takes Emily Hobhouse from England to America, Mexico and back to England. She reforms the town of Virginia, Minnesota falling in love with Mayor John Jackson. Jackson convinces Emily that ranching in Mexico will make their fortune. Waiting in Mexico for John Jackson to arrive and propose marriage Emily finds out that she built her hopes on the same sinking ground that Mexico City sits on. When he does arrive Jackson has eyes for the Mexican ladies, which destroys any thought of marriage. Emily returns to England to find that the Empire she loves has become cruel in its colonial war with the Boers in South Africa.
