Mac Maybrey is reluctant to take the offered job of securing Veronica (Ronnie) Giles's new homestead. The first hindrance is that he slept with her on New Year's Eve five years ago. The second reason is the secretive nature of the interview process. It is supposed to be a working science experiment in organic farming. Mac knows there is more to her secret experiment or she wouldn't need his specialized services. In reality, she is preparing for the end of the world as they know it. He accepts some people feel doomsday is a short time away, but he never considered the depth of preparation someone so ensconced in that lifestyle would go to.
