As a child, Marnette Coulter went to sleep each night to the sounds of her father beating her mother. Now, her parents are both dead and she herself is about to be thrown out on Boston's harsh streets.

As God's plan unfolds, Marnette finds herself living with previously unknown relatives in the newly settled prairie. Although she constructs a tissue of lies about her past, Marnette is not as successful in denying her attraction to Drew Britton, the doctor's handsome son.
