1700s: Beautiful and impulsive Katherine Putulo, daughter to a Scots doctor, has been raised in the foreign quarter of Muscovy (Moscow) among European émigrés. On her sister's wedding day, Katherine recklessly disguises herself as a Russian maid servant and slips away to the forbidden part of the city to join in the revelry of Tsar Peter's victorious returning army, dancing the night away with the native Russians.
