Mora had come to visit Glen Ghyll ostensibly so that she could meet Hamish McLean's family, but really to make up her mind whether or not she wanted to marry him. But much as she came to love Glen Ghyll, Mora found herself increasingly undecided about her emotional problems—particularly after she met Hamish's brother Adam, and found herself thinking about him far more than was good for her. Wasn't it only going to lead her into more difficulties if she fell in love with Adam, who seemed to be almost a reincarnation of that other, eighteenth-century Adam McLean, who was also the black sheep of the family and who had not hesitated to steal the Woman his brother loved? And what about Adam's old friend Helen Murdoe, who certainly seemed to have a prior claim where he was concerned?
