The old chateau had been closed for more than a year. Vanessa had come to air it on orders from her boss, the real-estate agent. Dust was everywhere, and cobwebs caught rays of sunlight. Suddenly, she was absolutely certain she had heard footsteps downstairs.

Now everything was silent. She waited for a moment, not daring to breathe. Then she heard the sound once again. Someone else was in the chateau.
