That’s what started Rilla Marston on her nightmare existenceâ€"

On a fog-shrouded April evening, Rilla was driving a delivery truck back to the florist. Then came the thud and a scraping, metallic sound. Rilla jammed on the brakes:

“Could dew came out on my forehead. I was almost crazy with fear. Pumping up my courage, I pushed myself out of the car and circled the front. My immediate reaction was relief; both lights were still burning. Whatever I’d bumpedâ€"well, it couldn’t be serious.

Rilla managed to get the still-breathing boy to the hospital. Then, not knowing whether he was alive or dead, she panicked and left before anyone got her name. The newspaper headlines screamed Hit and Run Driverâ€"and Rilla Marston became a hunted and haunted person…
