Brett Havolin and Tony Mareno were pards as close as a horse and saddle, and it wouldn't have occurred to Brett not to be at Tony's Flying Club outfit when trouble struck. But with no advance warning, by the time he arrives, Tony's body has been found with a bullet under his heart, and Brett has inherited his friend's ranch. The Flying Club is no great shakes of a spread, so Brett is surprised by the number of people eager to offer him considerable sums for his property. In fact, he's suspicious that it might have value for reasons not readily apparent - reasons which Tony may or may not have known before his death.
