The Americans believe that the North Vietnamese are using a new kind of guidance system for their SA-2 missiles. U.S. fighter aircraft are unable to detect surface-to-air launches on their radar equipment.

If this discovery is true, then the air war over Vietnam would be radically changed--to the detriment of U.S. troops in Vietnam.

Special Forces Captain Mack Gerber and a team of soldiers are called upon to make a nighttime HALO jump into the North--at 33,000 feet from a B-52.

The mission to investigate the superior Soviet guidance system becomes secondary in the face of subzero temperatures and lack of oxygen at that altitude. And Gerber knows that if they survive the dive, but are caught by the enemy, their stay in the infamous prison complex called the Hanoi Hilton won't be a vacation!
