Carol and Gregor had been friends since childhood, and he was fond of her, attached to her, liked to have her around -- but he was going to marry Pearl Carluke, a rich young lovely who, had he but realized it, regarded his work merely as a moderately useful adjunct to the more important job of being her husband.
