The gypsy Thirza predicted a wealthy but difficult life for her granddaughter Eleanor "Lonnie" Dunwell, an illegitimate working class girl. In 1921 her prediction comes true: Lonnie unexpectedly inherits five million dollars, and her safe world falls tragically apart.
