About This Book

This compelling story is set against the Scottish fishing industry during the late nineteenth century.

Seventeen-year-old Eden Murray returns to her native fishing village to find her father’s people. Born illegitimate, she was raised as a fisher-girl and has become as skilled as any at gutting herrings. But when her mother dies, she decides to seek her roots in Buckthorne.

Her new life begins as an unwelcome guest under the roof of her fanatical Uncle Caleb’s house where she is subjected to the attentions of his son John. He is inflamed and tormented by lust for Eden. But she is also prey to her growing feelings for Lewis Ross. Lewis’s ambitious mother, Euphemia, has other plans for her son and is hostile and hateful towards Eden. She becomes obsessive in her attempt to prevent them ever having a future together.

Between them, John and Caleb Murray, Euphemia, and Eden’s own conflicting feelings almost destroy her before her strong personality and determination emerges and she starts to fight back as a woman who has come into her own.
