The story is about Simon's struggle for recognition as an artist, as well as his desire to leave home and strike out on his own to get away from his manipulative father. He know it wont be easy since he has never held down a real job and has always relied on his wealthy father to pay his bills, but he is determined to strike out on his own someday soon. Then when his father's lawyers ask him to lie under oath to protect his father, he knows that he has to make his move sooner rather than later. He manages to leave the house without being detected and makes his way to the airport, where he catches a plane to Paris. He decides that painting portraits is the only way he can earn a living to support himself and that he will hopefully set himself up as an artist and paint portraits down at the Seine. Starting out on his own is not easy, especially since there is stiff competition from other artists. Then one day a woman who has often watched him painting, commissions him to do a picture for her. When the project is completed she invites him to have lunch with her and here she reveals that she is his mother, whom he has not seen since he was four years old. Life becomes easier for Simon after this, as his mother is also an artist. She introduces him to people that can help him to establish himself in Paris as an artist and soon he opens a gallery. There are also a couple of love stories that run through this story,- some are sad, but others make Simon happy. All in all this is a story about how things come right for Simon after having a difficult life while living with his father. He reconnects with his mom and she helps him on his way and also explains why she was forced to leave him with his father and move away to a place where she would be safe.
