It was a small Lancashire town on the eve of the General Strike. A town where the gap between the rich and poor was about to erupt into a bloody field of battle. To look at, Libby and Carrie Peel were identical twins. Libby's rebellious personality has always made her the leader, although Carrie, her devoted follower, turns out to have a few secrets of her own. When the twins' brother was killed during the First World War, their father became bitter and alcoholic, feared and resented by the women in his home as much as by the workers in his cotton mill. Libby's engagement to Harry, a solid respectable doctor, offers her a safe future; but after her first encounter with Tom Silver, a fiery young union leader, she can't get him out of her mind. When Tom has the same obsessive impact on Carrie, the twin's unity is in severe danger of being shattered. But by then, much has happened to change their lives and attitudes; and Carrie has discovered her own quiet strength.
