About This Book

The coach lurched to such an extent that Kit was thrown forward, bumping his head. Simultaneously, a shot rang out, and the frightened horses plunged.

"It's a hold-up!" screamed Mrs. Hood at the top of her voice. "Oh heaven have mercy, what's to become of us?"

The coach rocked from side to side and Barbara was conscious of a horse's hoofs thundering in pursuit, and a loud comand to halt.

"Get out," instructed a harsh voice.

While Barbara watched in silence, the highwayman calmly mounted to the driver's seat, briefly examined le Faile and descended. "Winged," he said, "I'd have done better to put a bullet through his heart..."

Glancing upwards, Barbara caught a glimpse of le Faile's livid face.

"He's dead!" she cried. "You've killed him!"

At the height of the French Terror, Barbara Neville escapes to England. Accompanying her is Kit, her seven-year-old cousin, and their protector on the Journey is Jason Travella, and arrogant young Englishman.

Back in England, Barbara begins to pick up the threads of her disrupted life. But one night she overhears a devilish plot -- someone is plannning to kill Kit.

Before she can enlist help in saving the boy's life, Barbara has to come to terms not only with her own emotions, but also with the passionate demands of Jason Tavella
