After months of planning Stephanie climbed out of her mother's VW Bug and waved good-bye. This hike was supposed to be her last hurrah before beginning her teaching career. But the stack of rejection letters on the kitchen table meant that her summer-long hike on the Pacific Crest Trail would be nothing more than an escape route.
