After a harrowing stint with the New York City Homicide Squad, veteran cop Steve “Rosie” Rosenberg, having returned to his Oklahoma roots where he’s been named Tulsa police chief, sees his bright and plucky young bride, Edna Murphy, graduate tops in her class at the Midwestern Branch of the FBI Academy. In New York, Rosie and Edna had run afoul of serial killer Roberto Trebor, and finally collaring him, had every reason to assume the wordplay-fixated murderer with the palindromic name was dead. But the crafty Trebor resurfaced and brazenly followed the newlyweds to Tulsa, taunting them anew during a wicked killing spree before Rosie and Edna were able to bring him down at last. Now the Rosenbergs are off to enigmatic San Francisco for a “relaxing” change of scene. On arrival, however, they quickly detect Trebor’s unmistakable hand in an array of clever anagram teasers. In a wild chase, the Rosenbergs come to realize they must kill their archenemy, or they are surely going to die.
