EXCERPT:

When lives unravel, who pays the price?

The castle solar was full of the pale white light of the winter morning, but there was no chill in the air and no fire in the grate in the large and airy room, and yet all Noren wanted was to be outside and with her Araent, her beloved.

Being the youngest and thus most junior in rank to the three women in the room, Noren slid a glance from under her lashes at the two women in the room with her as she bent her head industriously to her work. The other two liked their quiet, and out of respect, Noren restrained her exuberance and kept her conversation to a minimum. The younger of the two was that ageless beauty between a woman's onset of maturity and the end of her childbearing years, and the elder, a tiny woman with snow-white hair and dark, alert eyes. Noren carded and spun and gauged the distance to the door.

The light made the room almost glow, but there was no glare, making it ideal for doing the detailed work they were doing without straining their eyes overmuch to the sun or the fire, but it also meant there were no shadows, and nowhere to hide.
