Frank Reade Library No. 1, Vol. I, September 21, 1892In Frank Reade, Jr., and His New Steam Man, Frank Reade's father has decided to retire. Suddenly, one of his old friends is framed for murder , and Frank Reade, Jr., takes his new Steam Man, who can run incredibly fast while pulling a steel wagon at the same time, and servants Pomp and Barney, and heads out west. Once they reach the plains, they are attacked by Sioux warriors, and Pomp is captured. Then they encounter a group of cowboys led by the villain they are looking for, Artemus Cliff, who immediately tries to capture them, but the Steam Man outruns Cliff and his men, many of whom are killed during the pursuit. Next, they find the Sioux being attacked by Pawnees, and rescue Pomp during the chaos. They are again set upon by Cliff's men, who attempt to crush them with a giant rock, but the plan backfires, killing many more of the bad guys instead!Frank and his comrades meet up with some allies, a group who call themselves the Vigilants, who are trying to rescue beautiful young Bessie Rodman from Cliff who has kidnapped her. Of course, Frank pitches right in. But, Frank, Barney, and the Steam Man are captured. Pomp escapes, only to be captured by the Sioux again, and then rescued by a U.S. Cavalry troop. Chaos reigns supreme, and the outcome becomes most uncertain (based on Alan Brown, Tor Com).
