Through the mist young Stella Craig could see ever clearer the forbidding bulk of Trent Towers as she approached this ancestral home she had never seen before. But when the maid opened the great front door and stared with startled horror, it was evident that Stella was no stranger here.

Stella's face was that of the woman who had met a hideous death in this lonely place of fog and fear, and whose spirit now walked the night.
