Mason Hall, once a soldier in the U.S. Army, is now a Cheyenne warrior called Nighthawk. At his side is the mixed-blood woman, Ghostwind, a prophet and seer of the forthcoming battle--a battle in which Sioux, Cheyenne, and other tribes unite behind the legendary leaders Crazy Horse and Two Moon to defend their land against the white man.

On the other side of events is Adam Garrett, a journalist working under cover for the Grant administration. When he sets out with two Arikara scouts to catch up with Custer's command, Garrett is in turn pursued by his fiancée, Ann Malone, who fears for his life.
