The fog hung low over the Golden Gate, an appropriate setting for Allison Jones, for whom Phillip Marlowe and Sam Spade were more real than fictional, and whose offbeat occupation as a pet detective allowed her to live out her fantasies. Searching for a missing dog, she crossed paths with the city's most confirmed bachelor. David King was captivated by the slender sleuth, but she slipped from his arms into the night before he learned her name. Undaunted, he sent his fleet of limos onto the street to find her.
