A woman known only as Casey has a bone to pick with her own species. She sees humanity as a parasite on the earth's surface and vows to save the rest of the natural world by turning on her own kind in the most vicious way—Casey wants to unleash a virus that will prevent women from carrying pregnancies to term. In her warped imagination, the human race will simply die out once we hit fertility zero.
When the United States government gets wind of Casey's plan, President Susan Lytle puts her best agents on the case. The team includes Nan Harvey, the irascible head of Homeland Security, and Dr. Fred Halliday, an aging Nobel Prize winner who invented the first Self-Aware Machines (SAMs). SAMs are becoming frighteningly advanced, and it remains to be seen if they will help or hinder the team in its search for Casey.
The world teeters on the brink of nuclear war after China learns of the virus's terrifying potential. When Fred finally uncovers an unexpected clue about Casey's real identity will it be too late to stop her? Who will have dominion over our planet, humans or machines?
