'He prefers the company of sheep to women' was Alison's opinion of Joseph Church when he rescued her in a snowstorm on the Border hills and took her to his farmstead.

Certainly Joseph was not very pleased at having his lambing operations interrupted by a fool of a girl, up there writing articles for European Conservation Year, who did not know better than to get lost. Nevertheless they did seem to get thrown into each other's company rather often, and gradually Alison found herself altering her opinion of Joseph.

He did have other interests in life than his sheep - but if he was interested in a woman it was not, alas. Alison, but the beautiful Jazelle, who had humiliated and deceived him once, yet who, it seemed. still had all his love - the love that Alison now wanted for herself!
