Brielle knew she should not have married the handsome, scholarly Karvar, but she could see no other way to survive. Collapsing on her wedding night wasn't part of the plan, but it has brought about the changes she longed for. Unknown enemies forced her into drug addiction and blackmailed her to spy on the Protectorate family. She knows the marriage will end quietly once she is well again, and she regrets using the kind Puregen scientist for her own means.

A few weeks living in isolation at an old domed science station in the Big Poison, the wild jungle continent of New Prague, is the best way to hide her from her enemies while she recovers. Karvar can study the latest cyborg appliances the Alliance has collected while Brielle rests, and the Protectorate seeks out the enemy.

Late one night they leave the dome to see a rare Neon Orchid, a night blooming flower. The science station explodes. Someone wants Brielle dead.
