September 1999. In the dying days of the twentieth century, Paula, without any effort on her part, becomes the silent observer who witnesses events occurring in a reality that seems far removed from the one in which she lives currently. Oblivious to her own predicament, she becomes absorbed totally in the lives of others. These are three women who are involved in different relationships with the one man - a wealthy shipowner, Charles Lyndhurst. Inexplicably, the lives, loves and adventures of Louisa, Sylvia, Elizabeth and Charles, in 1867 Australia, begin to take precedence over Paula's present American life.
