High up in the branches of a sentinel maple Starlight Wells spins by day the dreams of a lost and never found girlhood. By night she flips the pages of her tattered storybook while savoring the memory of her beloved mother, and the noble era when knighthood was in flower.

Amid the rural poverty of northeastern Pennsylvania in 1892, the ramshackle abode Starlight shares with her crippled father is far removed from the derring-do of armor-clad heroes, and dreams are but a reprieve from an ever-worsening existence.
