Melissa agreed to accompany her boss, Richard "Rick" Rayburn, to California posing as his fiancée to help him with a marital problem. Most girls would have enjoyed the situation, since Rick was famous, yet Melissa had reservations about it.

After all, she wasn't in the least in love with Rick, nor he with her. So when she met and fell in love with Bartholomew Reed Huntingdon IV, she knew she'd been right to have doubts.

While Bart certainly found her attractive and was ready to have an affair, he didn't love her, either!
