Both Federation and Alliance forces had considered the resolution of the conflict on Victoria a diplomatic triumph. But now an unknown force struck a double blow, taking out an Alliance cruiser and then bringing down the ship which the Federation battle cruiser Shenandoah sent out to investigate the disaster. While Federation, Republic, and Alliance forces quickly zeroed in to prevent a three-way confrontation, a rebel army struck the first devastating blow in a campaign to overthrow the Republic's government. Suddenly a world at peace was transformed into a planet on the brink of destruction.
