The Merrymakers concert party was near the end of the road. Howard Layton, player-manager of the troupe, sensed he was fighting a losing battle against the competition of cinema and radio, and his audiences in the small towns and villages of East Anglia were rapidly shrinking. But it was the murder of the young star of the show that proved hardest to bear. For Debbie was his daughter and he and his wife Gloria had had ambitious plans for her career on the stage.
