And kill her it does. Doctors and police are baffled and innkeeper Shirley McClintock is dismayed--for the poor soul seems to have died for no good reason. She leaves behind absolutely no trace of where she's from or why she came to Santa Fe. No wallet, no credit cards, not even a license plate.

Though it's troublesome for Shirley, her remaining guests at Rancho del Valle are mercifully unmoved by the tragedy. The crazy lady in Ditch House goes her crazy way; her drunken companion continues to drink; and the middle-aged pair continue to enjoy the gentle landscape and soft weather.

Nevertheless, Shirley senses something wicked just around the corner. Like coldblooded murder. And a real, terrifying evil coming closer and closer to her peaceful abode...
