When crossword editor Belle Graham arrives at the Evening Crier, the latest news is a fire -- possibly arson -- at the Collins family stables. The Collinses made their fortune in bootleg whiskey before becoming a multimillion-dollar corporation. Now living the high life, they feud among themselves as their aging dad marries ever younger women.

Belle's P.I. hubby, Rosco, investigates the fire for the insurance company. Blame falls on the barn manager, a drunk who had been sober enough to rescue the horses before something knocked him into a coma. As Rosco searches for a needle in a haystack of clues, Belle guesses that someone in the quarrelsome clan already knows the answers...
