Why would a millionaire in his sixties, with no accusers to answer to or social ambitions to protect, move to reopen a forty-year-old scandal? That's what ex-seminarian Owen Keane, an introspective, introverted, often idiosyncratic law-firm researcher is being paid to find out. The firm has been discreetly retained by Robert Carteret, seeking answers to the mystery surrounding the plane crash that killed his brother and socialite fiancee. Now the archives are buttoned up tight, and Owen has to fall back on the gossip. Following a cold trail of the dead, he finds something alive and almost forgotten - and threatening - as he winds his way backward to the players in the mystery: the murderer, the victim and the crime.
