Brianne McCarty found much satisfaction in her job as a caseworker with troubled children. But sometimes she got too much involved with the youngsters she tried to help.

Katy Ward, a twelve-year-old shoplifter, seemed to be such a case. Though Katy refused to talk to Brianne at first, the young casework couldn't stop thinking about her. In time, with the help of Chad Ward, Katy's divorced father, Brianne was able to get the girl on the right track again. Brianne and Chad Ward were also on a brink of a romance. Then just as everything seemed wonderful, disaster struck. And Brianne had to make the most painful decision of her life.
