But all Dr. Leon Skripnik wants from Midge, an erstwhile Russian scholar, is a translation of a letter he's received from the Old Country. To get rid of him, she agrees to his request. The next morning, he's found dead.

As the last person to see him alive, Midge is hounded by her busybody mother, Leon's weepy ex-wife widow, Cousin Shmuel from the Old Country and others claiming ownership of Skripnik's Chagall painting. Then there's gorgeous detective Russo, who proves equally as intriguing as the case itself....
