“For a few moments I listened to stillness. Then I opened the door and slid out of the car. On either side of the track lay a tangle of black and grey shadow. Vast sheets of cloud floated southwards. The moonlight had faded to a dusting of light along the ground. I crept to the gate and looked along the road. The vehicle which had followed me was parked some six yards ahead. Whoever had been on my tail was now here in the dark with me. Fear struck like a blow, a knife-thrust of panic. I turned, my feet slipping on the uneven ground, a roaring urgency in my ears. Run!”
