They knew nothing of the curse when they found the jewel; a large dark Columbian emerald embedded in the centre of a gold bishop's cross. The cross had been hidden within a secret compartment in the antique mahogany writing box they had purchased at the Dirt Market in Beijing. The compartment had remained sealed since the days of the Boxer Rebellion, well over a hundred years ago. And with the cross there was an unfinished letter, written by a captain of the Bengal Lancers to his wife, telling of a brass chest containing church treasures and relics looted by the Boxers, a chest taken from them by the captain and supposedly buried somewhere in the city once known as Peking. The two Australians return to China to search for the chest and the treasures it contains. But others have learned of their quest and, in the cold mist of Beijing's winter, what had seemed like a simple task back in their leafy riverside Brisbane suburb, became a deadly game as the curse of the Dark Eye of the Jaguar takes its revenge.
