Dante's War

In this WWII thriller, Tech Sergeant Tony DeFreest, a radio operator and poet, parachutes into German-occupied Northern Italy and finds himself involved in an OSS mission to effect the surrender of the German Army. It comes apart. He takes off for OSS headquarters in Florence to save it while continuing to identify the war-torn country with the world of the Inferno he has been reading. Reaching his destination after overcoming grim obstacles, he is cleared of false treason charges, praised for his work, and leaves Dante's "dark wood," ready to climb the "mountain," his next journey in The Divine Comedy and a new life.
