1939 is a critical year for the theatrical Carver family. Grande dame Beatrice finds her leading man's preference for her daughter is humiliating. Another anxiety is her son Stephen's infatuation with the attractive American actress Erica Drayton. When it is revealed that Erica is the stepdaughter of Delphine, the estranged sister who came between Beatrice and her husband, Beatrice's rage is uncontainable.
