Carter Tiles is an unbending town marshal. He first learnt his trade as a wild kid on the Frontier under the tutelage of a famed gunfighter and he believes there is no middle ground, you're against the law or with it. By extension you're either dead or alive in his book. Now the bad old days are behind him and he is settled with a fine young family in a quiet little town near the Mexican border.
It was a simple transportation job, at least it appeared that way at first. To take the captured outlaw, Damon Caine from his jail in Mexico down to Yuma Penitentiary. But somewhere along the way Carter runs into the Cole brood, a band of hairy mountain men out for trouble. That's where Carter partners up with Jason Zac, a man as sharp and keen as one of the knives he carries.
But the transportation task doesn't quite pan out as intended and before long, Carter and Zac are bound on a chilling vengeance trail.
